Know the Instructor's Schedule
Many students who have taken courses in which Web sites were used advise, "Don't slack off," "Keep up with the work," and "Don't procrastinate!" For students who are used to more structured learning, the primary challenge to online learning is discipline. Instructors do not always schedule class time for students to participate in Web site activities nor monitor students' participation.
- If your course has a Web presence the instructor may expect students to check in regularly to get important updates about the class.
- If your course is Web enhanced with online quizzes, discussions, and homework assignments that are a required component of the class, you may need to complete these on your own time. The instructor may or may not dedicate class time for the online course requirements or provide reminders regarding online content and assignments.
- If you are in a Web-centric course or completely online course, it is especially important for you to be diligent and self-motivated.
Schedule Your Own Time
Just as you can spend too little time participating online, you can spend too much time participating. You may find yourself checking or posting to online discussions so much it interferes with other courses or responsibilities. Schedule a time every day or two to review discussions and messages and complete online course activities.
